Introduction

To cover as much of the season as possible, we use different technologies to grow our products. These are acquired through our experience in the field of agriculture and are perfected through experiments allocated each year for various crops. The most advanced technology we use is for growing melons, which leads to a diversity of species adapted to grow organically in Romania.

WATER MELON WITH BLACK SKIN

When you say, "black watermelon" you're likely referring to one of two watermelon types: the black beauty watermelon or the black diamond watermelon. We'll tell you what either one of those types taste and look like, just in case. Black diamond watermelons look distinctly different from the green striped fruit you're used to seeing. As you can imagine, their rind is completely a dark green-black color. Black diamond watermelons have an incredibly high water content. This means that their taste is quite subtle and largely diluted by all the water. However, they are still very sweet, crisp, and satisfying to chew. Their high in water content means they're perfect for making drinks.

WATER MELON WITHOUT SEEDS

The question is frequently asked (and often incorrectly assumed) about where seedless watermelons came from? Seedless watermelons were invented over 50 years ago, and they have few or no seeds. When we say seeds, we are talking about mature seeds, the black ones. Oftentimes, the white seed coats where a seed did not fully mature are assumed to be seeds. But this isn't the case! They are perfectly safe to swallow while eating, and don't worry - no watermelons will grow in your stomach despite the old wives' tale. So, how are seedless watermelons grown? Chromosomes are the building blocks that give characteristics, or traits, to living things including plants and watermelons. Watermelon breeders discovered that crossing a diploid plant (bearing the standard two sets of chromosomes) with a tetraploid plant (having four sets of chromosomes) results in a fruit that produces a triploid seed. (Yes, it has three sets of chromosomes.) This triploid seed is the seed that produces seedless watermelons! In other words, a seedless watermelon is a sterile hybrid which is created by crossing male pollen for a watermelon, containing 22 chromosomes per cell, with a female watermelon flower with 44 chromosomes per cell. When this seeded fruit matures, the small, white seed coats inside contain 33 chromosomes, rendering it sterile and incapable of producing seeds.

WATER MELON WITH YELLOW CORE

On the outside, yellow watermelons look exactly the same as pink watermelons with an identical, striped green rind. So what makes the inside colors different? Traditional watermelons get their signature pink hue from lycopene, the same antioxidant that makes tomatoes and grapefruits red. Yellow watermelons, however, don't contain lycopene, so they never take on a reddish color. Although yellow watermelons lack lycopene, they make up for it in beta carotene, a powerful antioxidant that protects against cancer. Surprisingly, the cultivation of yellow watermelons came before pink watermelons.

MELON PIEL DE SAPO

The Piel de Sapo melon is the melon of choice in Spain. Piel de Sapo means "frog skin" in Spanish, and while the rough mottled rind of these melons closely resembles the amphibian they are named after. The melon is shaped like an oval. The thick rind means that Piel de Sapos possess excellent shelf life and transportability and its tough exterior hides a dense, juicy and refreshing sweet flesh that has to be tried to be believed. The Piel de Sapo is different in appearance both internally and externally to a rockmelon. They are green on the outside with creamy yellow flesh, similar to a honeydew but generally sweeter in taste. When you cut a piel de sapo, don't cut too closely to the rind as that's where the melon isn't as sweet.
